Battle for Wesnoth is talked about a lot among open-source gaming fans, but not enough in the community at large. It's a turn based tactical RPG that comes with many scenarios that are full games in themselves. Cross platform, moddable, over 200 different unit types… just an amazing game, all completely free. So you're playing two totally different kinds of game rules on either one. I personally prefer how they've taken the time-tested classic freeciv and conservatively improved it, at freecivweb.org.
