I've been using Sygic Travel from the Czech Republic and really like it. It doesn't use Google Maps, but you just press the location on the map, click add, then it autosorts to give you an optimized itinerary (like yours does) and spits out the itinerary. It all depends on what you expect from the trip planner. I use the Road trip assistant tool. He offers me all the important answers, in a simple way and only what I need for the trip. Time budget control, how many hours I effectively want to drive, where my breaks are, alternative routes, and much more.
