Yes, Mass Effect did much better job with that story, so does StarSector. I tried playing SC and SC2, but every time jerky, low resolution and unfun arcade space battle gameplay part turned me off. StarSector is Star Control done right. #2 - Endless Sky - ALSO inspired by Escape Velocity, but IMO this is more polished Escape Velocity clone and could reasonably be called the modern successor. EXCELLENT space trade/piracy/combat and definitely take some good strategy to get far into the game. Source: 10 months ago
