Moving from central Illinois. Got a job offer today for a company in Englewood. First year salary will be 85,000 (73,000+12,000 sign-on). Realistically, after taxes, I've calculated my first year take home to be ~60,000, after which (if no raises or bonuses, only riding my salary) take home will be ~55,000. I use smartasset.com Good tax calculator. Assume $100,000/ yr from JEPI/JEPQ. Married filing jointly I get effective Fed rate of 8.48% with $8481. My state is listed as eff rate of 4.87% or $4868. No FICA of course. Taxes total about 15%. Big deal. Now if you have $300,000 in dividends I would either go with qualified dividends or long term gains rate on selling shares. Source: 12 months ago

I knew people who were hit by the dotcom bubble pretty hard but ended up getting jobs in government, academia (I left for a computational research lab myself), non-profits, and high-touch but not tech businesses (e.g. a friend bailed to a law firm - they were flush with cash but none of the partners knew how or wanted to run the IT side of things.). That leaves you with DoD fed and contractors. For the former usajobs.gov is where you look for those but keep in mind Spain is a favorite so openings are rare, and even when they are posted they may already be filled as a contractor conversion.
