Showing them isn't limited by any API at least. They are directly taken from one of the "gif" sites, the source message for them looks like this . That is directly the syntax for markdown "Show inline image", just with a weirdly formatted URL. While the small inline image is then uploaded to reddit for faster access... Source: about 3 years ago
