On macOS, I use SensibleSideButtons to map my Logitech mouse side buttons to Swipe Right and Swipe Left. This works as a generic Forwards/Back in lots of places: Safari, Firefox, Finder, iTerm2. To remedy, I've been using this little app found from another thread. I keep this app open while running stepmania and it remap button presses solving the problem.
