An embedded engine is also a much faster path to viable use cases. For example Sciter [1] has some degree of success despite implementing only a sane subset of the DOM API. I've never tried it but DeskGap lets you build a desktop app like Electron, but it uses your existing installed version of Chrome instead of bundling it's own Chrome engine inside the app so it keeps it much more lightweight.
