I am actually Italian and also there healthcare is public, in Germany it's a mix. When out of Europe, one has just to buy an international insurance, most of them cover worldwide, others cover macroregions. I use deluxe.com. I get their high-security checks with a hologram and chemical-sensitive paper. To be honest, it's been over two years since I bought any, I write only about 2 checks a year now.
