I don't know about the orignal jagex client, but runelite supports linux. You should be able to downlaod it directly from https://runelite.net/. Source: 10 months ago
You also may need to update RuneLite. The client updates automatically regularly, but the launcher never updates. If you installed RuneLite a long time ago RuneLite's launcher may be too outdated to work with the Jagex launcher. Source: 10 months ago
