  I think Rocket.net is a bit ahead of cloudways. Their cloudflare enterprise integration is a bit better and cheaper for the user (both APO and Agro Smart Routing is included in the price). Tom Dupuis, the guy you quoted switched from cloudways to rocket.net and has a lot of in depth blog posts up comparing both. Source: about 2 years ago

  I have a custom AWS stack paired with cloudflare. If I were just starting off I would use something like spinupwp which can give you something similar with a nginx/fastcgi setup which is what you want. Then run your dns through cloudflare to take advantage or their proxy/security/performance features. You will not need any "performance" plugins this way which are all heavy and garbage.
