I'm also curious because it seems like using a phone with no strings attached today seems almost impossible unless you get an actually old phone, which either works poorly or costs a lot as part of a retro collection or something. Even my iPhone 4S doesn't work if I boot it up, and that came out last decade. Of course, in terms of using a number for making a new account or subscription of sorts, one could still be... You can also take this poll over at bettor edge, and whichever team gets the most votes, will get an extra 5k donated to their respective charity (the loser will still get a 1k donation). So if you are so inclined, head over there and vote for the huskers and Team Jack. Right now we're losing 65% to 35% to the gophers on who should get the extra donation so vote if you can! Note they ask for a phone number to... Source: 10 months ago
To be very frank, I was also thinking that another reason people tend to use Whatsapp is that it’s not really tied to any actual account as in the case of iCloud, right? It’s just a phone number that’s required, and so if you want to stay private, or just log in with a fake account, you can use a free phone number for verification, just as you would do with some disposable temporary mail when you want to log in to... While searching for another way out, I stumbled upon a service called quackr.io. It claims to provide temporary phone numbers for registration confirmation purposes. Using fake numbers for app verification is quite tempting, and I read that it's a savior when it comes to website registration. Still, I'm unsure if it's worth the effort because I also read many claiming that temporary phone numbers don't work with... Source: 11 months ago
Idk if this is the right subreddit for this question, but hopin I dont get banned XD. I want to get a verification code for something, but I dont have a phone number that I can use. The key difference here being that this is two way hashing so passwords can be decrypted. In reality, there are a lot of attack vectors like MITM, event logging or sometimes straight up storing data in plaintext. Through these hackers can generally get passwords of all users of these services. So, why don't people use local password managers? Just a txt file encrypted with "master password" should be pretty... - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago
When you're at a point where you're relying on a display name to make security-critical decisions, you've already lost. Character substitutions like ķeepass or ƙeepass or keypass are at least possible to spot if you know the name of the product, but not the full URL. But there are many ways to create lookalike domains that don't change the product name: https://keepass.org https://keepass.net https://keepass.info... - Source: Hacker News / 8 months ago
> People love to hate on passwords but the reality is that for many circumstances (threat models) they are the best compromise. You can make them more than strong enough (take 32+ bytes out of /dev/random and encode however you like, nobody will ever brute force that in this universe) and various passwords managers solve the problem of re-use (never reuse a password). > And it comes with the benefit that you... - Source: Hacker News / 8 months ago
