  • New to home server: probably nuking it
Secure remote access can be facilitated through encrypted tunnels. VPNs, SSH, Cloudflare tunnel, SOCKS, etc. Can all be secure ways of remotely accessing network resources. What you use will vary, depending upon the type of access you require and/or prefer. For file management, there are multiple tools for this task - Nextcloud, Seafile, Pydio, Sandstorm, FileRun, and more available for the choosing. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Dropbox alternative backed by S3/Backblaze
Pydio Cells (https://pydio.com/) is a great open-source selfhosted file sync and sharing alternative to Nextcloud. It supports, and strongly recommends the use of an S3 compatible storage backend. It actually works better with S3 storage than a normal file system storage. It's been completely rewritten in Go using microservices and APIs which makes it faster than Nextcloud (PHP) and Seafile (Python). I've tried it... Source: about 1 year ago
  • Need a cloud solution for mobile users not on VPN
As a replacement for owncloud have you considered https://pydio.com/, https://nextcloud.com/ or https://www.seafile.com/en/home/? Source: over 1 year ago

  • What to use for sharing files with the outside?
At $work we instantiated a lufi instance (in DMZ, subdomain DNS record, reverse-proxied) in order to allow our users / developers / projects managers to share files with our customers, just giving to them an HTTPS link. This solution may respond to your needs, too. Source: 11 months ago
  • Lightweight solution to receive files
I have spun up Gokapi - which works a treat. However it requires a login - so is great for files going the other way. Have also looked at Lufi [doesnt require a login for end user but no way to randomly generate link (that I know about?) - worried about being spammed to oblivion] and ProjectSend [total overkill for my needs, but very cool - also requires a login for end user].
