  • Centrifugo – scalable real-time messaging server. Handles WebSocket, EventSource, GRPC, HTTP-streaming and SockJS connections, manages channel subscriptions. Provides API to publish messages into channels. Integrates well with any stack.
Centrifugo is very similar to pusher.com Channels product (https://pusher.com/channels) – but self-hosted. Also – somewhat similar to socket.io - but not a library, so can work with any backend. Centrifugo is pretty unique in terms of available features sum – so can't say that there is a direct analogue I've heard about - sth from one product, sth from another, sth unique. And of course there are alternatives... - Source: Reddit / 23 days ago
  • Update client side from server side
An easier solution, which I've used on several projects, is to use an existing service such as Pusher.com, which comes with a very generous free plan and will let you establish server -> client and client client communications in literally a few lines of JavaScript. - Source: Reddit / about 1 month ago
  • Cloud solution for maintaining socket connections with clients?
Https://pusher.com/ is actually exactly what we're looking for, but it's on the more expensive side. This seems like a common problem, so I was curious if anyone knows of a cloud solution offered by AWS, Google, Microsoft, Oracle, or someone else. - Source: Reddit / about 1 month ago
  • Ask HN: Build your own chat service or buy?
From what I understand you are talking about an chat inside your app, and not a chat for your company (like matrix or Slack). I would say it depends. If you know how to implement long polling then making a simple chat is not hard, the hardest part, being certainly the UI, but it can be improved over time. The only thing to remember is to sanitize and check all the input data, as a chat is basically moving... - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago

  • Production & the useEffect() Hook
React is built on the idea of components, and styling them can be hellish at times. Some cannot be styled by simply passing CSS on them, probably because they are from an API you're using(e.g. getStream) or have styles that are difficult to control in the environment they're being staged. Situations like this present a unique headache, one that requires a unique solution. - Source: dev.to / 2 months ago
