  But this did prompt me to do some searching, and I see https://pngquant.org/ which seems to achieve jpeg like size reduction while maintaining the file as a png. • Impossible to convert from EPUB to PDF

  I convert EPUBs to PDFs often with Zamar @ zamzar.com. You are limited to 2 or 3 free conversions per day. When you get to the site, note that "Convert to" format is found by having to scroll down a lot in column 2 under Document formats, which is below image types at the top of column.
