If "file explorer" by your definition is a window with have multiple columns for displaying file hierarchy, file list of current working directory, and file preview, get Pathfinder (https://cocoatech.com/).   Commander One is pretty cool. I hear you about the subscription model. I'm happy to subscribe for apps that are crucial for my workflow (incl. Path Finder) but I wouldn't want to set up repeating payments for apps that I didn't use so much. Source: about 2 years ago
