The new AOM is really buggy (c.f. The original), so "alive" probably only applies to AOE2. I'm not sure I'd call AOE4 "AOE" (yeah, it's branded as it, but so was "Age of Empires Online"), so the series basically died at AOE3. You could use a short response timeout (<1s) to make it impractical for human players to participate - for instance, that's what Battlesnake does (https://play.battlesnake.com/).
