I find the third-party app Öffi to have a far superior UX than any official app and it attempts to support as many transportation systems (mainly in German-speaking countries) as possible. That's just for route planning/departures/maps though. In the VBB area it can tell you which ticket to buy, but you can't buy it through the app (you need to use official apps or the vending machines for this). Source: over 2 years ago

The Transportr app[0], which is Free Software and even on F-Droid, shows public transit directions for a number of cities around the world. There is now a standardized format for transit routing and timetables, and transit authorities freely share it, so Google has no especial monopoly in that regard.
