I haven’t gotten to play Distance yet, but its precursor was Nitronic Rush an amazing student project from a few years ago and it is free but I think discontinued now. Distance is a much expanded and commercial release of that concept game. Source: about 3 years ago

There are currently 2 different rank leaderboards: one for the stable client and one for the lazer client. The osu! Website shows rankings of the stable client while lazers ingame profile viewer shows the rank you achieved in the lazer client using the osu!lazer website.
