I used NameExif https://us.digicamsoft.com/softnamexif.html first to rename all my files into created YYYY-MM-DD-HH-MM-SS-[event (optional)], then ran exifsort to move them all into YYYY-MM folders. Source: about 1 year ago
The Date Taken data should be preserved which is more important than the file date. You can sort your folders by Date Taken or what I do is use NameExif to rename my photos by date/time taken, which means they’ll always sort correctly and the info can never be accidentally lost. Name Mangler (19 $) - IMHO the best mass file renamer out there. Its support of RegEx and variables makes it extremely powerful for advanced users, but for basic users it's still incredibly easy to use and quick. The best feature, though, is that if you have files/folders selected in Finder, you can click on the Dock icon and the selection is automatically loaded into the renaming panel. You mentioned batch renamers but have you tried Name Mangler from Many Tricks? It can do sequences and everything else. Fantastic. Many Tricks has been around forever. Butler is one of my favorite Mac utilities. Source: about 1 year ago
