Also, I heard from my friend, that his DAC is a Pangolin FB3. If you have a licence to the Beyond software, then you can use the modulaser app to interface with MIDI. It sounds like it's exactly what I need, and is only $100 (free trial). It was a bummer when I heard that the Beyond license is $700. I read that modulaser isn't compatible with the cheaper Pangolin software that my friend uses, because it doesn't... Source: over 2 years ago
The cyclops is specifically for the modular domain, but it looks like there are other laser DAC's which might do something similar.
