This is still in active development. I would recommend trying postmarketOS or Mobian if you have a compatible device. They are both mainly packaged with Phosh, which is also a GNOME project, although most development is headed by Purism. Source: almost 2 years ago

I, an engineer, am not doing this myself, too. There is a middle ground though: just use a privacy-oriented Android build, like DivestOS. [1] There are a couple caveats: 1. DivestOS is a slightly modified Lineage version that officially supports relocking on some phones (in contrast with Lineage, which I think can be relocked but explicitly tells users not to do that).
