I created a simplified implementation of AlphaFold 3 (limited strictly to protein monomers) in PyTorch to see if it was possible to train on a single GPU. Rather than aiming to reproduce the accuracy of the original paper, the goal was only to generate plausible looking 3D protein structures. This turned out to be harder than expected - you can find a more in depth write up at... - Source: Hacker News / about 18 hours ago
You can run VSCode on iPad simply by not using Electron: https://medium.com/@thebaselab/my-attempt-to-run-vs-code-on-ipad-687aceaa82f4. - Source: Hacker News / 1 day ago
I'd consider diving into A/B testing. For UX/UI designers, it will literally help your products generate additional revenue. You can read this comprehensive guide on A/B Testing by Tony Hancock - https://medium.com/@ashancock/the-art-of-the-a-b-test-statistics-101-for-ux-designers-ux-researchers-780229e1e378. - Source: Hacker News / 1 day ago
A few weeks ago I read his essay "What We Might Mean When We Say a Clock is Wrong" and found it very compelling. He's an excellent writer. https://medium.com/@108/what-we-might-mean-when-we-say-a-clock-is-wrong-5f055ff631a6. - Source: Hacker News / 5 days ago
> and yet one year after GPT-4 release, no one has caught up to OpenAI You're wrong, Claude 3 Opus beat OpenAI’s GPT-4 in Elo rating just a month ago. They since lost the top position, but they are at ELO 1246 compared to GPT-4 at 1250 and GPT-4o at 1287. They are bottlenecked at GPT-4 level with small variations. That's the issue. Why have they stopped advancing? The gap between GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 is so much wider... - Source: Hacker News / 3 days ago
In Pijul, conflicts are not modelled as a "failure to merge", but rather as the standard case. Specifically, conflicts happen between two changes, and are solved by one change. The resolution change solves the conflict between the same two changes, no matter if other changes have been made concurrently. Once solved, conflicts never come back. - from https://pijul.org/. - Source: Hacker News / 3 months ago
Do not try and bend the spoon, that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth...there is no spoon. Then you will see it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself -- what Pijul users say when they overhear git users arguing with each other about monorepos. https://pijul.org/. - Source: Hacker News / 3 months ago
I believe that handling merges like this correctly was a motive for designing pijul: https://pijul.org See the item on the splash page about 'merge correctness'. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find the post detailing the behavior with a bit of searching. - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
Darcs [0] patch theory was a predecessor to OTs/CRDTs (and a predecessor to git as well; in some ways it is the "smart" to which git was named "dumb"). When it works and performs well it is still sometimes version control magic. Pijul [1] is an interesting experiment to watch, trying to keep the patch theory flag flying and also trying to bring in updates from OTs and CRDTs as it can. IMHO the only really interesting alternative to Git currently is Pijul (https://pijul.org) as it is not a more-or-less Git clone but a different approach to the problem itself. Pijul allows for very interesting development and ci/cd workflows. - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
