>The organization and ideas should transcend an individual. It is never the case is my observation (as much as I want you to be correct). Any attempt to detach individual form the goals/idea of an organization leads to bureaucracy, incompetence, and perhaps most importantly authoritarianism of the evil kind. ( there are relatively benign versions of authoritarianism ) >when the ideas seem to be really more needed... - Source: Hacker News / 12 months ago
The organization and ideas should transcend an individual. The organization right now seems headed for irrelevance, when the ideas seem to be really more needed now that ever. Right now he’s and his camp are in charge, so if he and the group want to run it into the ground so be it. Hopefully the ideas live on and some group can carry it forward. The closest one I can think of to imgur is Mediagoblin. Source: almost 3 years ago
Personally, I wouldn't use Nextcloud for photos. Instead, I'd look at Lychee, Media Goblin or something dedicated to photo hosting. Lychee looks great, but turned me off because when I looked at it, it seemed to be like Apple Photos in that it puts image files in a database file instead of just raw files in folders. Https://immich.app/ has built in auto-detection and tagging. I am surprised by the over-engineered comment. Object auto-detection is kind of an advanced feature and I would expect a lot of extra infra required for it. Immich hides it because they just publish docker containers for you but I imagine it would feel more complex if you were to look at the internals. - Source: Hacker News / 21 days ago
I setup Immich in a few minutes with an old PC running FreeNAS: https://immich.app/ Their Android/iOS Flutter app needs some polishing, but overall it's very usable and very similar to Google Photos. - Source: Hacker News / 25 days ago
It really is hard to leave Gmail when all of your data has been conveniently stored therein. This is one of Google's retention strategies and it is indeed brilliant. That said, there's a vast number of self-hosted alternatives like Stalwart Mail (email) [1], Immich (images) [2], NextCloud (Google Docs) [3], etc. [1] https://stalwa.rt [2] https://immich.app [3] https://nextcloud.com/. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 months ago
Last year we added CLIP-based image search to https://immich.app/ and even though I have a pretty good understanding of how it works, it still blows my mind damn near every day. It's the closest thing to magic I've ever seen. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 months ago
