Nope, this doesn't work any more. Shodan checks all ports (so any attackers using data from Shodan already know which ports you have open), and tools like masscan (https://github.com/robertdavidgraham/masscan) let you portscan the entire IPv4 address space in less than 10 minutes. IIRC (and this is knowledge from a few years ago, when I was more involved in things), Hashcat has the ability to do variations. It can also use your GPU instead of just the CPU so that you can make an absurd number of guesses per second. (Like really, really absurd). Source: about 1 year ago
