IIRC (and this is knowledge from a few years ago, when I was more involved in things), Hashcat has the ability to do variations. It can also use your GPU instead of just the CPU so that you can make an absurd number of guesses per second. (Like really, really absurd). Source: about 1 year ago

Crack Station supports a few different algorithms, you could try dumping it there to see if it can figure it out/exsists in the database. Source: 11 months ago

I think the syntax is john --wordlist=, but I sometimes get that error and don't know why, you can try crackstation.net or hashcat. I forgot, but I think one time I got the error on one vm and tried on another kali vm and it worked.. IDK., but yeah if john doesn't work use another option like crackstation.net.
