  • I honestly don't like using most Openstreetmap websites: slow, clunky. Is there a better way to do this faster on my own desktop?
KDE Marble might be able to do it. Looks like it can open some OSM file type at least. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Are there any Foss globe apps?
Marble. It's a KDE app, and it looks very similar to the Google Earth app. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • Seeking recommendation: best GIS for viewing KML streamed from external data sources
The system is intended to receive streaming data with different sensitivity labels and automatically create views/layers that the user is authorized to access. I'm leaning toward a customized version of KDE Marble (https://marble.kde.org/), which makes sense because it's open source and I'm going to need to make it PitBull-aware with the PitBull SDK. But I can still decide at this point between Marble and... Source: about 2 years ago
  • Does "provide touch id to install" mean any amount of signature checking is skipped?
For folks who don't want to click a link that just randomly starts downloading installers: https://marble.kde.org/. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Does "provide touch id to install" mean any amount of signature checking is skipped?
I'll reveal that it was "Marble". I thought signing was a thing outside of the Apple store too. I.E. a package can _come with_ a signature or not, even when downloaded outside of the Apple store. I've whitelist installs with the "this one is not signed" intervention in System Preferences. I've also had off-store downloads that did not require that intervention. I believe in the latter case they are signed. Source: over 2 years ago

  • Engineering for Slow Internet
I still think engineering for slow internet is really important, and massively under appreciated by most software developers, but ... LEO systems (like Starlink, especially StarLink) essentially solve the core problems now. I did an Arctic transit (Alaska to Norway) in the summer of 2023, and we could make FaceTime video calls from the ship, despite cloud cover, being quite far from land. The polar coverage... - Source: Hacker News / 4 days ago
  • What the damaged Svalbard cable looked like when it came up from the depths
You can look at the https://satellitemap.space/ to see that starlink isn't (yet) too feasible in the northern/arctic areas. Even in the Nordic countries the connections are not that great. - Source: Hacker News / 8 days ago
  • Real-time map of every Starlink satellite in orbit
This one has been around for ages, and it does work on mobile too. https://satellitemap.space/. - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago
  • Live Starlink Constellation and Map
Some fun things I spotted: - https://satellitemap.space/?constellation=starlink&norad=59207 is rising, started recently? - There's one over Africa that says re-entry in 30 minutes. - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago
  • Real-time map of every Starlink satellite in orbit
I prefer https://satellitemap.space/ You can see the base station locations there, which is helpful in visualizing how the system works in various locales. - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago
