I use a third party service, Lynx (getlynx.co) which creates and programs the locks. It gets bookings from my PMS (or in your case a calendar export from the OTAs would work too if you don't have a PMS... Which you should if you're using multiple OTAs) and then generates the codes. We're commonly doing this with logging, using services such as Loggly or DataDog. We're using managed databases, be it on AWS, Heroku or database-vendor-specific solutions.
