Lossless Cut Reviews

  1. does a specific job very well

LosslessCut makes it very easy to cut out a section of video. It can also arrange sequences of cuts. It is very fast because it does not reformat the data; that also means it doesn't degrade the quality.

It only reliably cuts at video keyframes; this could be an issue if you want 100% precision on your cuts. It does not attempt other editing tasks such as reformat or region crop.

Like many video editors it is a GUI to ffmpeg. You can see the ffmpeg commands generated and use them outside LosslessCut if necessary.

    👍 Pros:    Easy to use|Fast
    👎 Cons:    Limited features

  • Ask HN: Getting Started with DAW?
So, I saw the other day the release of the ep-133, and it happens that I want to get started doing that kind of stuff (e.g., creating simple beats). I have zero knowledge about DAW/sampling and music in general (my background is in soft. engineering), so the first thing that I searched on Google is "open source daw" and I found LMMS (https://lmms.io/). I'm going through the documentation right now. Do you know... - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago
  • Midi I/O vs USB
Of course, you need some kind of DAW software in your PC that receives MIDI (from LPK), creates the audio data and sends them to Volt. If you have zero experience with this, start with some kind of simple and self-contained DAW, like e.g. "LMMS" (free download). Later you can graduate to more complex (and expensive) DAWs and separate VST plugins. Source: 11 months ago

For music making, it kind of depends on what you use normally but LMMS is a decent free DAW. Source: 12 months ago
  • My dual boot with windows 11 won't boot past intro screen or even into bios after failed attempt to fix frequent Kerbal panic.
Give a try to Ardour, LMMS, MusE and Rosegarden. Source: 12 months ago

  • Show HN: CompressX, my FFmpeg wrapper for macOS, made $9k in the last 4 months
For lossless cut, there's the LosslessCut [1] app, which even has an experimental but mostly working version of a "smart cut" feature [2] (aka. Only re-encode the minimal mandatory amount of frames if you trim at a point between 2 key frames) [1]: https://github.com/mifi/lossless-cut. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 month ago
  • Cleaning up my 200GB iCloud with some JavaScript
    > thought I cropped/edited a video, it is still there in full length and resolution It's been possible to create a clip from a video file that merely changes what parts of the video are displayed without effecting the data in the original since the Classic Mac OS days. If you want to completely remove unwanted portions of a video to reduce the size without a loss of quality, there are many options. LosslessCut is... - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
  • FFmpeg is getting better with multithreaded transcoding pipelines
Https://www.vapoursynth.com/ I have seen some niche software built on ffmpeg like losslesscut: https://github.com/mifi/lossless-cut But I don't know anything "comprehensive.". - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago
  • Lossless Cut is my new favourite tool to cut parts from a video without any hassle
Lossless Cut is probably the simplest way to cut out parts of a video without having to re-encode it or use an online service. It is open source, free and available for all platforms. It is in essence a frontend for FFMPEG and cuts without re-encoding, so the results are instantaneous. - Source: dev.to / 7 months ago
  • Tips and utilities to manage collections of videos.
Additionally I would like if possible to shorten (both to reduce dimension and to make them less boring) my videos by trimming the beginning and/or ends where often there is nothing interesting happening and possibly change the thumbnails for easier identification. Do you know of any tool that does the job with the minimum quality degradation possible? Many years ago I've tried with some videos and a tool I don't... Source: 8 months ago
