Is this throughput, or do you pay for Internet 500-700Mbps service? Do you live in an area close to neighbors? I would start with getting a Wifi Analyzer and run it on a laptop or desktop with Wifi and manually set a non-congested channel for your AP. I'm not sure how it works beyond that it reads /proc, but whatever it does it uses a whole lot more compute than nethogs does (which also displays per process and also uses /proc as the information source).
