I'm just wondering if your having a codec issue. The only way to know for sure if a codec is the problem is by installing a codec pack, like K-Lite Codec Pack (which is what I'm using). Source: almost 2 years ago
If you're using Windows, in addition to VLC you could use the MPC-HC player that's included in the excellent K-Lite Codec Pack from Codec Guide. Source: about 2 years ago
