If you're just starting out collecting, I recommend finding a couple on-going series that interest you and work on filling out the back catalog for those. As you read more comics you'll start identifying writers and artists that you like, which can send you down a rabbit hole, and you'll pick up references to older storylines that you can try and hunt down.
