I think you are on the right track. For me, the first version works better because the mark-up colour of the line is picked up again in the pin. I'm not sure what to make of the distorted pin in the second image, to be honest. It doesn't suggest a location, or "place", which is probably what you were trying to achieve with the pin as a stylistic device. What will definitely give the logo the final touch in the end... Typography: I don't think that compressed sans serif font is very exciting. I know the topic of the poster is pretty bland, but this is a school project. You should be showing off your creativity. Consider choosing two different fonts, one for the headers and one for the body copy. I know you are still learning, so type pairings might not be an intuitive process for you yet.
