Getting a user's location from their IP should be possible with something like this https://ipgeolocation.io/ (free for up to 1000 requests per day which my puny website will never get). Latitude + longitude data from this service could be used to place the location dot accurately on the globe, although I'd have to look more into the math aspect of that before. I ask about serving websites because understanding how a web server works (very basically) with a browser or any client is a huge step in understanding HTTP, host headers, and even host header attacks (if you're into that sort of thing.. They give you a quite thorough understanding in all the fundamentals and they have labs set up where you can practice everything you learn at each step.
