Comments Owl for Hacker News [1] adds a mute button to comments and user profiles which lets you do this. If you want to roll a quick version of your own, once you've identified rows containing comments you want to block, you need to hide all subsequent rows which have a higher indent. Definitely not perfect. The default "collapse comment" buttons being right-aligned is pure insanity, IMO. They should be left-aligned so they're all in line with each other as you scroll down the page, so you barely have to move your mouse. Fortunately this extension[1] takes care of that. You can also use https://hnrss.github.io/ or http://hnapp.com/ to make RSS feeds of various types.
