I was about 10 when I first discovered Vfx. I started out with a program called Hitfilm. Hitfilm has a free version plus a wide variety of youtube tutorials. It thought me the basics of 2D VFX. "Regular" people don't really need FFMPEG. Regular people need tools with GUIs that have a non-generic purpose. So stuff like https://kdenlive.org/en/ that are backed by ffmpeg are (imo) superior "regular" person tools.
