Self hosted Gitlab instance is an option. The only cost is hosting (personally I am using hetzner.com CPX31 instance, 16€ for 160GB a month but you can add 1TB volume for 45€ a month if you need more space). Just keep in mind that Gitlab needs about 8GB RAM to work correctly (it crashes on 2 and is only kinda stable on 4). You can also use an older computer or a NAS if you prefer to go that route. After long years' service, in October 2022, last year, I terminated this volunteer job for that school, I noticed the hosting company site5.com holds my credit card info, since Site5.com does not give the customer ability to remove a credit card, so I had contacted the hosting company site5.com at least 3 times to request to remove my credit card info since I no longer work for that school. It won't be the same, part of SEO is also optimizing the server where the site will live. If you get free or cheap hosting, your webpage will be at a significant SEO disadvantage. I'm sure you can afford $20/mo for solid hosting from site5.com. Source: about 3 years ago
