Roll20 Reviews

  1. When it works, its mediocre

As a DM for homebrew games, I used Roll20 for 2+ years. When it works, its OK. When it doesn't, its frustrating. I use a lot of custom rules and they are simply not supported due to a lack of modularity within the system. A simple variant of Proficiency Dice in 5e is outlined in the rules, and even it is hacky and not well supported on Roll20.

The format feels like it was made two decades ago, and the web console spits out warnings and errors left and right. There has even been some conspiracies / drama with some of the higher-ups at Roll20, showing a lack of leadership.

Please, let's let Roll20 die. Support another system.

👍 Pros:    Can purchase modules like curse of strahd and tomb of annihilation|Free for dms and players|Use with a variaty of systems|Many features
👎 Cons:    Not modular enough for me|Hacky programming|Ugly|Features feel clunky and slow|Some features do not work well at all|Buggy
  2. Not very easy to learn

Not easy to learn, not friendly controls

    👍 Pros:    The most famous
👎 Cons:    User experiance|Design|Costly pro plan

  • DMs, how do you visually display a dungeon to your players? (Map, drawing, etc.)
I have an in-person campaign, but I actually use Talespire for the maps and visuals, by having a tv in the room with us with a computer hooked up. I use the site Tales Tavern to get a majority of my maps, and then spend anywhere from 10 mins to 2 hours editing it to my liking. I have a visual map for every location for my campaign, and it completely immerses my players, they love what I’m able to come up with and... Source: 5 months ago

  • My extremely detailed free-roam map of Central Mithandor that I've been working on here and there for the last 5 years
I used Wonderdraft as the base program to create this project. (It's a great, cheap, one time purchase map-making program!) I used many of its included assets, however I also used additional custom assets that includes the following: Paid premium assets offered by Wonderdraft, both paid and free custom assets uploaded to the website Cartographyassets.com (some assets may no longer be available as I made this over... • Looking for advice on running DnD game on stream!
There are plenty of D&D software programs out there that are free and paid versions. Many of them with the ability to have friends join and interact with the table. As basic as Tabletop Simulator to Fantasy Grounds (both on steam that I have experience with, not an endorsement). roll20.net being a popular browser based version. Source: 6 months ago
