If you have a hard drive enclosure, I would recommend using the enclosure to connect the drive to a computer, and running a drive diagnostic utility.   Smart diagnostics can be done with drive manufacturer's utilities, or a number of third-party utilities, such as hddscan for windows.   In order to extend a partition, the unallocated space must immediately follow the partition. If there's something between the partition and the unallocated space, then you'll need to use a more sophisticated partition manager to rearrange things. GParted can do this, for example.
