I used to just use hangfire.io in .net and worked wonderfully for any long running tasks or schedules. Had a great queuing system, UI to know if they failed , etc. That's how I'd send emails, pdf's, and other things along that nature. I have experimented with other service meshes and I was able to get up to speed quickly: Linkerd = 1 day, Istio = 3 days, NGINX Service Mesh = 5 days, but Consul Connect service mesh took at least 11 days to get off the ground.
