In general, the cell bands used in the US are not supported by many Xiaomi and Redmi phones (not sure if any of them have good coverage of US bands). Check on gsmarena.com for the band coverage and then check your carrier's website for what bands they have service on. If there isn't a good overlap, your phone will not be very useful for making cellular calls or using cellular data. Source: 12 months ago

A coffee shop I started going to has free wifi, but what is confounding is that once connected to their wifi I can only visit maybe 5-10% of sites I try connecting to. Works great with google.com, maps.google.com, tmz.com .
