No one cares where a writer went to school or prison, they only care that you can write. My best piece of advice is to figure out your niche (health, finance, tech, lifestyle etc...) and approach a few brand name blogs or publications and ask if you can write an article for them for free to publish on their site.   I know that at Linkedin you can post a job ad for free but the quality is pathetic. I recieved 900 applications in 1 hour and none of them was worth interviewing.
