Most web browsers have a quick proxy switcher extension and I recommend you use that if you do tunnel your traffic over ssh. My personal favorite is FoxyProxy. I will say your link with ssh -D, that got me through college, so I can confirm it works, but it will only route traffic that supports a proxy, I used tsocks to add the function to other apps, looks like no updates in 15 years, no idea if it still works. Source: over 1 year ago
