I just do my pleasantries and then share the British Council Flashcards for Kids page https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/flashcards - I use them even with adults. I ask them to chose a topic, or I just choose 'Food' or 'Home' as a starting point. 2) If they are real beginners, whether they are adults or children, use some of these flashcards https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/flashcards and see if they can read the words and answer simple questions about the pictures.
