Federated Networks Association mentions (4)

  • Why social platforms should work more like email. Email is a stable, decentralized technology that spurs interoperability and competition, presenting a model for other internet technologies.
Yes, were it not for the "email is great" part I think I would agree with the sentiment of the article. In fact the idea of having intercompatible social network already exists, I think it is called a federated social network, see https://feneas.org/. The idea hasn't really taken off yet because there is more to social media than just data exchange (think about moderation etc...), but I don't believe Facebook and... Source: almost 3 years ago
  • As of Augest 2021 what is in your opinion the best reddit alternative and why? what are it's best qualities?
It's what happened to reddit, having the open source code for reddit didn't really help once they closed it. You could still replace the URL with a proprietary codebase or rewrite some of the code before re-licensing so it's not bullet proof. The best defense I can think off is having it be hosted by some volunteer led non profit (something like feneas ) so it won't get sold off. Source: almost 3 years ago

  • I am hosting free, open-source, privacy respecting web services! (Searx, Invidious, Matrix, etc)
I think it would be better to collaborate with some existing organisations like disroot or feneas, having a organisation with multiple maintainers is useful if someone decides to quit (which is normal, any contribution is great). So the instance does not go down. Existing organisations are also more well known. Source: about 3 years ago

k3sup mentions (29)

  • How do you archive your side hobby projects?
I recommend learning docker first, then pick a vps host from vpsbenchmarks, then use k3sup to deploy a kubernetes cluster on that, then follow a getting-started kubernetes tutorial from there. You'll also want to buy a domain name with tld-list and then provision a TLS certificate with cert-manager and letsencrypt (skip steps 1-4 because Google Cloud is overpriced). • What do you use as a kubernetes base?
I just installed k3s yesterday using k3sup on 6 VMs (3 masters, 3 workers) each with 2GB RAM ( limited by the actual RAM on hardware, for now ) with Ubuntu 22.04 as the base OS. Source: about 1 year ago
  • What's a cheap way to setup your own Kubernetes cluster locally or remote?
k3s installed with k3sup, longhorn for storage, kube-vip for API VIP, and MetalLB for service load balancer using local subnet, and of course Rancher. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Easiest way to provision and configure ephemeral cluster locally
Yeah, this is the answer, but I would use this with K3S: https://github.com/alexellis/k3sup. Source: over 1 year ago
