If you want a good free software I'd recommend familyecho.com - you can import/export family trees and I also think there's a share function if you and your friends want? It does also calculate the closest relation between two people automatically. Something akin to a fill-in-the-blank template maybe? This was all prompted by my beginning to write one on jotform.com.
