If you want a good free software I'd recommend familyecho.com - you can import/export family trees and I also think there's a share function if you and your friends want? It does also calculate the closest relation between two people automatically. I've had good results for the past ~6 months using Habit List [0]. What's worked for me is to slowly add 1-2 new items, being thoughtful about prioritizing them.
