Some booking websites allow you to search specifically for hostels. I just took a quick glance, and expedia.com allows it. Booking.com doesn't appear so, but maybe I missed something. Source: 11 months ago
Whatever safe bed you can find at this point. You've left it too late to be picky and it's looking like it's going to be the start of the the busiest, boomiest tourist season here in Italy ever. Expect to have to stay very, very, very far from city centers and transit connections or to pay $400+/night on a place. Check out visitacity.com to help you arrange an itinerary. Used it for a number of trips including Paris. Stayed at an Airbnb close to the downtown but should have picked a nicer place further out if I had taken time to understand their public transit system before hand. Source: 5 months ago
