Based on our record, Elastic UI should be more popular than Lightning Design System. It has been mentiond 5 times since March 2021. Check out Elastic-UI. It has replaced Material for me. It feels similar enough to working with MUI while offering, imo, a cooler aesthetic. Watch out though, it can get heavy. Source: almost 3 years ago
LWC is supposed to be their approach to play nice with web standards and appeal to a broader group, and "web components" without the lightning niche specific stuff can get you close especially if you use https://lightningdesignsystem.com for your off-platform-hosted page and web components.
