The "manor" example is one of the few points I've seen brought up in response, but it's far from clear-cut, as the forum posts linked above explain. Feel free to draw your own conclusions from them. I'm not convinced it was the best use of $15 million, but I also don't think that buying a medium-price-range conference center was an obviously bad idea, and the money came from private donors (not the standard EA... Sure! None of the ways of donating that I know about (directly to the charities themselves, EA funds, others here) have a minimum amount or anything like that. Source: over 1 year ago
It’s easy to look for excuses not to give but donations can make a big difference, especially if targeted in the right places. See comments further down about Givewell and Effective Altruism. https://funds.effectivealtruism.org. Source: over 1 year ago

Good news: If you want to support global health and development but not animal welfare, you can just donate to the Global Health and Development Fund! None of the money will go to anti-factory farming charities. Even better, you don't even need to go through EA: You could donate directly to charities recommended by GiveWell so you know exactly who's getting your money. Source: almost 2 years ago
Before this war I had a setup on givedirectly.org to donate little bit to the poorest people on earth in west Afrika, before realizing this money when donated to dictatorships is indirectly ends up in the dirty pockets of some dictators or terrorists like wagner group and impact of this kind of donation is very limited and long term consequences of it might not even be beneficial at all. You should definitely help random strangers! Do it by contributing money to stop malaria, or whatever the current top charity on http://givewell.org is. That helps far more people with far more efficiency than giving money directly to someone you pass on the street (and if you want to give money directly to people who need it, there’s also http://givedirectly.org, which does exactly that (and was also in... Okay, thanks. And do you think this holds true even as I played for a few hours on the new patch? Btw, thank you so much for this amazing work! I'm really mind blown :) I saw that you dont want donations, so I'll donate 50$ to givedirectly.org instead! Because this has given me even more enjoyment than the original game. For example, $40/month is already a decent level for a person in many African countries. This fund provides directly this sum to one person givedirectly.org. Source: over 1 year ago
In general I love the concept of "just give cash", Donated a decent amount of givedirectly.org etc., but here I don't think it solves anything. The key negative of prepayment meters is they are MUCH more expensive per unit than normal pricing, right? It's about removing that unfairness primarily. Source: over 1 year ago
