  • I'm Russian in the US. I want to donate my 3080 GPU to someone from Ukraine in the US
Before this war I had a setup on givedirectly.org to donate little bit to the poorest people on earth in west Afrika, before realizing this money when donated to dictatorships is indirectly ends up in the dirty pockets of some dictators or terrorists like wagner group and impact of this kind of donation is very limited and long term consequences of it might not even be beneficial at all. • Why does a 13 and 14 year old has a gun?
You should definitely help random strangers! Do it by contributing money to stop malaria, or whatever the current top charity on http://givewell.org is. That helps far more people with far more efficiency than giving money directly to someone you pass on the street (and if you want to give money directly to people who need it, there’s also http://givedirectly.org, which does exactly that (and was also in... • 0.12 'Eye of Magnus' Update (for CK3 1.8.2)
Okay, thanks. And do you think this holds true even as I played for a few hours on the new patch? Btw, thank you so much for this amazing work! I'm really mind blown :) I saw that you dont want donations, so I'll donate 50$ to givedirectly.org instead! Because this has given me even more enjoyment than the original game. • Capitalism has lifted trillions out of poverty! Look at Somalia, Peru, Chile, the DRC, the Philippines, Nigeria, Niger, South Africa, Tanzania, Madagascar, India, Ukraine, Russia, Brazil, Mozambique, Liberia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Burundi, Chad, South Sudan, Central African R. and Haiti!
For example, $40/month is already a decent level for a person in many African countries. This fund provides directly this sum to one person givedirectly.org. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Instead of this prepayment meter nastiness, couldn't everyone have a basic amount free electricity daily?
In general I love the concept of "just give cash", Donated a decent amount of givedirectly.org etc., but here I don't think it solves anything. The key negative of prepayment meters is they are MUCH more expensive per unit than normal pricing, right? It's about removing that unfairness primarily. Source: over 1 year ago

  • GiveDirectly – Send money directly to people who need it most
GiveDirectly is a great org that’s working in data driven experimental way to identify effective ways to donate. I’ve donated to them for years. In a similar vein is GiveWell, https://givewell.org/, who research and identify the top charities to donate to to maximize dollar impact. Their mission is to simplify giving by just telling you a very small number of orgs, removing any need for analysis or choice.... - Source: Hacker News / 7 months ago
  • Sam Bankman-Fried and the effective altruism delusion
When I donate to http://givewell.org , I don't care about the relative value they place on arms and legs. What I care about is avoiding pseudo-charities. You know, the ones that pop up in exposé articles every now and then where most of the money goes to marketing and admin, a tiny sliver goes to the actual cause, and then a clown car pulls up full of people who try to rationalize how this is actually a good... - Source: Hacker News / 8 months ago
  • What life changing thing can you buy for less than $100?
Givewell.org. It is a charity evaluator which uses extensive research to investigate the best, most cost-effective ways to help people in the world today. They have their Top Charities Fund which supports the highest-priority funding needs among their Top Charities. They also have their All Grants Fund to fill the highest-impact funding opportunities they can find, whether those opportunities are top charities or... Source: 12 months ago

  • I have a contract to be cryopreserved after my legal death for the chance of future revival AMA
I unfortunately don't think that the 45€ per month that I spend on my cryonics contract would be able to save the poor. Also, it's not an either or. I regularly donate to charities with good rating from givewell.org. I'm not giving every possible penny I have, but my guess is that neither are you buddy. Source: about 1 year ago
